What happened after graduation?
I began the first of many careers immediately after we graduated, with Prudential Insurance Co. in Houston, and was secretary to the Director of Public Relations & Advertising when I left after three years, to be a stenographer for the FBI. I loved it!! Three years later the lure of legal work enticed me & I worked for Butler, Binion, Rice, Cook & Knapp over the next ten years. I loved it!! When my husband & I moved our family to the city of New Caney, Texas, I stayed home a year and then went to work for the New Caney ISD. Richard Streiff (remember Coach Streiff?), my former history teacher, was then principal of the high school. So, I was secretary for a couple of years. When the district added a class in business office services I jumped on the opportunity and taught for the next 13 years. I loved it!! (Do you see a trend here?) But, woke up one morning and said can't do this anymore and retired the end of the following semester. Staying home was fun for awhile but it seems I have a short attention span so I decided to get my real estate license. You can guess the rest (I loved it!!) but some health problems jumped up and I had to retire, again. Funny how one career leads to another, to another, & again another but I enjoyed every one of them immensely. God knew just what I needed and kept moving me on to the next step.
John was an Iron Worker, building some of those tall buildings you see all over Houston. He became the Business Manager after a number of years and retired at 53. Well, retired from the trade but is always working on something for someone.
Children and grandchildren
My husband and I married in 1962. We have three children and two granddaughters we love dearly. And, we'll become great-grandparents in April 2008. Now that's going to be an experience, since I don't think I'm old enough to even have grandchildren. Ha ha. Guess you all know what I mean.
I never thought I would…
I NEVER thought I would teach.. I didn't get a degree but with the equivalent of two years plus my work experience I was able to qualify. BUT, I learned as much as I taught!
Rewarding events since 1958
Life since 1958 has been so rewarding that it's hard to pick one event. Like most of you, my children & grandchildren would rank right at the top.
What I would do differently
Probably a lot of things, but life is what it is so I don't really think about that.
Special interests or hobbies
My special interests & hobbies have changed as often as my careers! I've always loved to sew but haven't done it for years. Decorative arts painting was a passion for a long time. Throw in some macrame, ceramics, cake decorating, stained glass, etc. I used to say if you want to start a craft business let me know, I have all the tools in the attic! I enjoy singing in our church choir. And, I spend a lot of time on the computer. I'm heavy into genealogy and can't seem to quit. I LOVE IT!!
Favorite vacation spot
No favorite vacation spot. John & I have a Foretravel Motorhome and enjoy traveling in it. We go to Tennessee a couple of times a year (he has family there). We had planned to go to Canada this past April, but had to postpone when John had bypass surgery. Maybe next year. That is, if diesel doesn't go so high we can't afford it.
Additional thoughts and comments
Look forward so much to seeing everyone. Can't possibly have been 50 years, could it?
